Why you need Tencel™ in your life

Introducing the wondrous, eco-friendly fibre that looks good, feels good and is kind to trees. We’re into it, big time…

At Ninety Percent we want to use the best fabrics possible for the purpose of our clothes looking good and feeling good. We also want them to have minimal impact on the environment and the people who make them. That’s a given. If there’s a kinder alternative and it still does the fashion job we want it to then why would we not use it? It feels like a no-brainer to us.

So, we wanted to tell you more about Tencel™ because we have a lot of pieces that are made from it. You can see them below, and they range from slinky-feeling bodysuits to stretch jersey dresses and super-soft jumpsuits. It’s very versatile and is, in a nutshell, an eco alternative to viscose.

Viscose and rayon are plant-based man made fibres, normally derived from wood that’s pulped using chemicals and then shaped into a yarn. Environmental damage from conventional production can be significant and often includes illegal deforestation.

Tencel™ is preferable than 'conventional' rayon because Lenzing™ has developed a 'closed-loop system' process that reclaims and re-uses the chemicals required to transform wood pulp into cellulosic fibres and reduces the toxicity of the waste effluent to almost zero. This means you can feel good that your fashion choices are not contributing to an adverse impact on the environment.

In addition, Lenzing™ only uses Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified raw materials - normally Beech and Eucalyptus - or otherwise wood and pulp sourced to their own standards for sustainability. So it’s much kinder to trees, too.

Tencel™ also has many looks-good, feels-good qualities, too. Read below for a mini guide as to why it’s is such a good-looking multi-tasker…

It won’t make you sweat (as much)

The smooth fibre surface absorbs moisture more efficiently than cotton. This supports the body’s natural thermal regulating mechanism, keeping your skin feeling cool and dry throughout the day and night.

It has a chic shine

It has a sleek surface area, giving textiles a luxurious sheen. The deeper dye uptake and smooth fibre surface of Tencel™ fibres make them shine.

It gives good drape

Soft to the touch, fabrics containing Tencel™ fibres produce a smooth drape, which looks flattering.

It won’t fade as quickly

Colour dyes can penetrate deeply into the fibre structure, resulting in colours more vibrant than conventionally dyed fibres. They’re less prone to fade, too.

It’s strong

Not that it’s a competition but Tencel™ fibres are distinguished by their greater strength compared to other cellulose fibres. They are durable and have a long-lasting quality.
